We are made of noise. Not literal noise — though there is plenty of that — but the quieter kind made of stories, explanations, grievances, ambitions, resentments, hopes, fears, and promises. Most of us are perpetually worried about what tomorrow will finally deliver. We are stimulated by this noise to anticipate, and then, we narrate. We ruminate about our past, our choices, and why next time things will be different. Sometimes these explanations help, but most of the time, our internal noise is a distraction from the raw experience that is right in front of us.
